ADX Indicator: How to Actually Make It Work in Real Trading

Read time: 4 min

TL;DR

  • The ADX shows trend strength, not direction.

  • Most traders misuse it as a signal, it’s best used as a filter.

  • Real edge comes from proven market tendencies (like Natural Gas short bias).

  • Combine ADX with RSI or other signals to smooth results.

  • Always test with clear exit rules and robust data.

The ADX indicator helps traders measure trend strength, but it’s best used together with other signals and solid exit rules for a robust trading strategy

What Is the ADX Indicator?

The ADX, or Average Directional Index, is a simple tool to measure how strong a trend is. It doesn’t tell you which way the market will move. It just tells you if it’s moving, or stuck going sideways.

How the ADX Works With DMI+ and DMI-

ADX comes with two sidekicks:

  • DMI+ (Directional Movement Index Plus): measures upward strength.

  • DMI- (Directional Movement Index Minus): measures downward strength.

Think of the ADX as the stage manager, DMI+ and DMI- are the singers. They show who’s leading the trend.

Why Most Beginners Get the ADX Indicator Wrong

Here’s the trap: many traders use ADX to enter trades.
They see it cross a level, say 20 or 25, and jump in.
But the ADX is a lagging tool. It tells you what has been strong, not what’s about to be.
No wonder people lose money when they blindly follow it.

ADX Trading Strategy: The Real Purpose & A Powerful Filter

ADX shines when it filters out the noise.

Use it to:

  • Avoid sideways markets.

  • Stay in only when trends have power.

  • Pair with stronger signals, like RSI.

It’s the bodyguard for your main setup, it keeps the wrong trades out. By using the ADX as a trend filter, beginners can avoid choppy markets and focus on high-probability trades

The Secret Hack: Start With Proven Market Edge

Here’s the real trick:
An indicator won’t magically create an edge.
You must start with an edge. Then the ADX helps you keep it.

Example?
After running 72,000+ strategies and 14.5 million trades in my Algo vs Crap series, many edges stood out, and one of them is:
Natural Gas works best with short strategies.
Period. Long setups were weaker.
When you know this, the ADX becomes your filter to tighten that edge even more.

Real Test: ADX + Natural Gas Short Strategy

Here’s how it works:

  • A simple short entry when an uptrend shows weakness.

  • The ADX confirms trend strength or sideways action.

  • You exit after a fixed number of bars.

The result? Clear, repeatable, robust.

Compare it with same strategy and ADX optimization on other markets Gold, Australian Dollar. You can see how the same indicator fails miserably on two completely different markets, not because the indicator is not good, but because you are starting with no market edge.

These markets don’t share Natural Gas’s clear short bias. Without that edge, the ADX filter can’t protect a weak idea, no matter how much you optimize the levels.

How to Combine the ADX Indicator with RSI (Step by Step)

  • Use RSI to time when price is stretched.

  • ADX tells you if the trend is still alive.

  • Together, they filter low-quality trades.

Below is a comparison table of multiple strategies using ADX, DI+, DI- as signals and as a filter for RSI2 strategy

Notice how using ADX with RSI2 lifted the profit factor and Return/DD ratio, proving the filter makes your signal more robust when the market edge is real.

Why Random Optimization Fails Without Market Edge

Lots of traders tweak ADX levels endlessly. 14? 20? 25?

But the number alone won’t fix a weak edge.
Without a real market tendency, like Natural Gas’s short drift, you’re just data-mining noise.

So how do you actually put this into action? Follow this simple workflow.

1️⃣ Find a real market edge.
2️⃣ Pick a strong entry signal (RSI, pattern, breakout).
3️⃣ Add ADX as a filter to skip low-momentum trades.
4️⃣ Test simple exits (fixed bars, trailing stop).
5️⃣ Combine in a portfolio for smoother returns.

FAQs

1️⃣ What is the ADX good for?
Measuring if a trend is strong or weak.

Above 20–25 means strong trend; below means sideways.

Daily or 4H are common. It depends on your strategy.

Lagging. It measures what has happened.

8️⃣ How do I test if ADX helps?
Run a backtest. See if adding ADX improves drawdown or equity curve shape.

Conclusion: ADX Won’t Save You, But It Can Help

No single indicator will turn a bad idea into profits.
The ADX can’t predict the future.
But when you start with an edge, use it smartly, and combine it with solid exits, it works.
